Yoga

Yoga classes are included in the extensive list of therapies available at Living Elements in Sidlesham.

Yoga is a powerful and empowering practice through which we can find relief from stress and develop the ability to relax our bodies and minds. It can promote improvements to our health and a greater sense of vitality, increasing energy levels and joy in life.

The art and science of Yoga offers a framework of postures that enable us to increase strength and flexibility, and much more. With focus on balance, alignment and breath we move mindfully in and out of each posture or asana. As we get in touch with our bodies and take time to notice, we find that our bodies have much to teach us. We can take what we learn out into the world to support our daily lives.

The ancient Sanscrit word, Yoga translates as union, or communion, and is derived from the root word yug which means to yoke or to join. Attention to the breath and its integration with movement supports us in bringing together in balance mind body and spirit. By stretching and focusing on the body we can calm the mind and move towards a quieter space within,

  • Yoga is a perfect source of relaxation, healing and preparation for meditation.
  • It is widely recognised that the practice of Yoga can be beneficial to a wide range of physical, mental and emotional conditions.

Yoga For Everybody

Yoga can be adapted to suit the needs of almost anyone, The content of the class will depend on who is there, and the pace and postures can be adapted to suit the needs and ability of each individual. To get most from a class it is important that you listen to your body and notice its limits in that moment. By working thoughtfully and negotiating with rather than forcing the body we make progress.

Safety and Comfort

  • It is best not to eat before a lesson. A light meal or snack a couple of hours before is OK, but wait about 4 hours after a heavy meal before practicing.
  • It is preferable to practice bare foot; bring warm socks in case we are sitting or lying still for a while. Mats and blocks are provided at the Living Elements Clinic.
  • Bring a blanket to keep yourself cosy during relaxation and a firm cushion to help you sit comfortably with a straight back.
