Health is not an accident and YOUR life is precious

The school holidays are almost over. The traffic on the roads will be returning to their normal patterns but its still Summer! Just.

Sadly, on Saturday afternoon, during a race, one of my friends and fellow competitors was taken seriously ill whilst racing next to me and died shortly after whilst on board his yacht with his beloved wife with him. Between the other 4 yachts in the race we summoned help (Coastguard, rescue boats, other RIBS) and circled as we found we could not get aboard safely to help his wife. It was a desperate situation and all the while this was taking place with a harbour full of pleasure yachts. For a while we had a fairly quiet corner of the harbour for the drama to be played out in – helicopters, Conservancy launches, other RIBS etc etc

My friend, John Davis, OBE, had sailed and raced all his life and was the Chichester Harbour Conservancy Harbour Master. His untimely death has been a shock to all in the Solent Sunbeam fleet and will be to his many colleagues and friends from many walks of life. He really was larger than life – and he was a big man in all senses of the word.

Currently we have many other diasters being played out on a huge scale – the flooding in Pakistan, volcanic eruptions, large weather storms and hurricanes etc

My point in this sad tale is two fold…

A healthy life, filled with vitality and energy, is NOT a right or an accident – just as you top up a car with fuel and oil and service it regularly, bodies and minds require the same things.

You need to be active about doing the following each and every day:

  • good quality fuel – food that is uncontaminated – EACH and every day
  • food that has the right nutrients in them and NOT “tasty” but nutritionally worthless foodstuffs
  • plenty of clean water each day
  • regular exercise / movement for all aspects of health
  • plenty of laughter and humour
  • great friends and relationships

Whilst you may be alive, being truly healthy is a whole different experience.

If you aren’t sure how healthy you are -

or if you know that you need to be taking some healthier actions

  • a re-balance,
  • a detox / cleanse,
  • attend to your diet,
  • need some nutritional supplements to help you achieve your goal,
  • want to tone up your body,
  • relax the mind and body
  • or something else,

- then the Living Elements Clinic is here to help. Call us now on 01243 641665 for some advice or to make an appointment. http://www.livingelements.co.uk/

I am sorry if this is all a bit heavy but you only come this way once in this lifetime. YOUR choices ultimately will define what you can get out of your life. If I wasn’t passionate about the possibility of health and well-being for everyone I could quite easily be doing something else today than writing this!

Health is not an accident. YOU have to take the right actions each and every day to make a difference. You may err sometimes, but make sure you do something to offset it! We may be able to help, we may not – why not ask and find out? Give us a call on 01243 641665.

As part of my committment to making a difference for people, I am about to launch some introductions to a new and unique course – the Vital Elements for Health VIP Programme. This is a 6 month course and will begin soon. ..Over 20 years in the making – it is ready! If you are interested in finding out more – reply to this email and put “Vital Elements” in the title and I will forward on more details.

Time goes so quickly and life is precious. Sometimes we all need to re-appraise what we are doing and how, so that we can achieve our purpose in life…what do you need to adjust right now?

I look forward to receiving your thoughts and experiences and discovering what actions you are going to do..?

My friend John was to retire last year, but stayed on “a bit longer”. His second granchild is already overdue by 5 days…please – don’t leave it too late to make YOUR CHANGES….

Kind regards, love and hugs,

YOUR HEALTH IS MY PRIORITY.

Heartburn challenges

Heartburn can be a persistent and distressing complaint for many people. It is characterised by pain in the upper abdomen / epigastric area and general feeling of discomfort and distension, though maybe not all the time. Usually worst after eating. It is surprisingly common, and most people do nothing about it until it gets unbearable. Please – don’t do that!

When it is presented in my clinic, I offer some or all of the following advice:

  • Choose your foods carefully – chocolate, peppermint, foods rich in saturated fat, coffee – and even citrus juices and fruits can irritate the oesophagus.
  • Lose excess weight – we can help you here!,
  • Quit smoking and
  • cut down on alcohol or better still, abstain completely.

Loosen your belt or clothing tp prevent excess pressure on your upper abdomen especially when seated.

Lie on your left – studies have shown that if you must lie down after a meal, it is better to do so on your left side.  This way the stomach has fewer pulls and strains on it to irritate further.

Try a glass of organic milk to counteract the acid, or a cup of ginger tea to soothe and aid digestion.

Finally, pick a papaya!  They contain papain, an enzyme that can naturally soothe your stomach.

Plus! See me - your Osteopath!

I am confident that with some direct treatment around the oesophagus and solar plexus and diaphragm your heartburn can be substantially improved, as has been the case with MANY patients before. There are some well tried-and-tested osteopathic techniques to help just this problem that many other practitioners do not know. They are quite quick and can “work miracles” as one of my patients recently reported.

So – don’t just struggle on just because the doctor can only offer Gavascon. Seek a rteatment rather than a “sticking plaster to hide the problem”. Drugs may not be on the only answer!

To make an appointment with Gayle Palmer for her assessment of your case call the clinic directly on 01243 641665

Assurring you of my best attention all the time

Yellow, Orange, Red, Green, Blue and Purple

As children we might have been told to ‘eat our greens’, but now health experts agree it’s just as important to eat our reds, oranges, yellows, blues and purples, too.
Eat the rainbow
Scientists now know that many of the naturally occurring chemicals (phytochemicals) responsible for giving fruit and veg their bright colours actually help keep us healthy and free from disease. Fruit and vegetables contain hundreds of colourful phytochemicals that act as antioxidants, which help to ‘mop up’ potentially harmful molecules called free radicals before they get a chance to damage cells.

As a result, antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables can help to protect against a whole host of problems, including heart disease, cancer, cataracts and even premature ageing.

Research shows phytochemicals in fruit and vegetables of various colours also offer other health benefits. As a result, as well as encouraging us to eat (at least) five servings of fruit and vegetables a day, nutritionists now say it’s important to choose a ‘rainbow’ of colours. This means picking one daily serving of fruit and vegetables from each of the four colour groups – red, orange/ yellow, green, and purple/blue.

All those different colours will add plenty of flavours and textures to dishes, making meals not just more healthy, but more enjoyable and satisfying.

1. Red

Choose from: raspberries, cranberries, strawberries, cherries, pomegranates, apples, grapes, rhubarb, pink grapefruit, watermelon, guava, tomatoes, beetroot, peppers, radishes, radicchio and potatoes.

What they contain: Lycopene (a carotenoid) and anthocyanins (a flavonoid) are two of the main pigments that give fruit and vegetables a red colour. Many of these also provide good amounts of vitamin C.

Why they are good for you: Tomatoes, watermelon, guava and pink grapefruit are a good source of lycopene, which may help protect against some cancers, especially prostate cancer. We absorb lycopene more easily when foods have been heated, so processed tomatoes are better than raw. Fat, such as olive oil or cheese, also helps enhance absorption. Anthocyanins, found in red fruits, may help fight cancer, keep the heart healthy, improve vision and memory and avoid urinary tract infections.

Antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables can help to protect against a whole host of problems, including heart disease, cancer, cataracts and even premature ageing.
2. GreenWhat they contain: Green fruit and veg are coloured by a pigment called chlorophyll. Many are good sources of two carotenoids called lutein and zeaxanthin, plus they contain phytochemicals such as indoles and glucosinolates and nutrients such as beta-carotene, folate, iron and calcium.

Why they are good for you: Research shows that lutein and zeaxanthin act as ‘natural’ sunglasses and filter out harmful light that can damage the eyes. A good intake of these antioxidants may help prevent age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness, and may help protect against cataracts. Green vegetables may also help protect against cancer.

3. Purple/blue

Choose from: blackberries, blueberries, grapes, blackcurrants, plums, prunes, raisins, red cabbage, red onions, and aubergine.

What they contain: Purple and blue fruits and vegetables are coloured by phytochemicals called anthocyanins. Many of these foods also contain ellagic acid and proanthocyanidins.

Why they are good for you: Anthocyanins may help to keep the heart healthy and reduce the risk of strokes, while ellagic acid may help to protect against cancer. Good intakes of anthocyanins have also been linked to improving balance, co-ordination and short-term memory in old age, as well as better vision, although more research needs to be carried out to confirm these findings. Research shows that proanthocyanidins may help to protect against urinary tract infections.

4. Orange/yellow

Choose from: apricots, cantaloupe and Galia melons, mangoes, peaches, papaya, oranges, satsumas, grapefruit, pineapple, nectarines, carrots, swede, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, yellow and orange peppers, pumpkin and sweetcorn.

What they contain: As well as being a good source of vitamin C, yellow and orange fruits contain carotenoids such as beta-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin.

Why they are good for you: With the exception of citrus fruits and pineapple, most yellow and orange foods are packed with beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A – good for vision in dim light and maintaining the skin and cells that line the airways and the digestive and urinary tracts.

Beta-cryptoxanthin – in mangoes, nectarines, peaches, peppers and citrus fruit – may maintain the respiratory tract, reduce the risk of lung cancer and ease inflammation associated with arthritis.

Do you know how many fruits and veg intake a day is recommended by the World Health Organisation?
Its between 8-10 for most people, and if you are a sportsperson it is 13 portions! If this sounds impossible to manage due to time / cost / availability or other reasons? Well why not have at least 5 portions a day in the form of WHOLE FOOD organic supplements and eat the rest. It is actually a cheaper way to get your required number of portions and they are easy to take at a time fo your choosing…
The supplements to look for are Carotenoid Complex, Flavonoid Complex and Cruciferous Plus Complex, all by GNLD and can be ordered here – http://www.livingelements.co.uk/?page_id=2211 or call in to the Living Elements Clinic to buy yours in person.
YOUR health IS OUR PRIORITY – The Living Elements Team

Choose from: asparagus, avocado, rocket, spinach, lettuce, watercress, cucumber, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, leafy cabbage, spring greens, beans, peas, sugar snap peas, mangetout, cress, courgette, peppers, spring onions, leeks, apples, grapes and kiwi fruit.

Yoga Workshop – Discovering the bones!

August 14, 2010

Discovering the Bones – Yoga workshop

Yoga has many titles before it, which can be confusing. ..We see pictures of elaborate poses and postures which seem to be far beyond our means…however Yoga is for everybody. The word yoga can be translated as ‘union’. However we interpolate this, the body/mind connection or to the universal, we can not escape, we are all joined in the experience of ‘being human’!, living in a vessel through which we experience.

Yoga is a way of exploring this vessel, the body. By listening to the body we can learn from it. Refusing to push the body into extreme postures against its wishes. We can then have an emphasis on exploration and not on achieving, opening the possibility to learn a great deal about ourselves.

“The way to do (Yoga) is for it to be relaxing, without effort, with the wave, with movement, with breathing. You can reach the same things without strain, with an “intelligent heart”.

Vanda Scaravelli. from ‘Awakening the spine’ Harper Colins.

So whether you are new to yoga or have a practice, this workshop will give you the opportunity to explore movement. To awaken the body and mind through learning to listen to our bodies.

Discovering our bones will be the focus of the workshop. Looking at basic anatomy to facilitate movement and stillness.

The workshop will consist of yoga asanas (postures), discussion around the skeleton, breathing and meditation.

Saturday August 14th 10.15 – 12.30pm

Cost £26 to be paid in advance please. Cheques to Simon Barkworth and posted to the clinic. Thank you.
